Thank you for taking the time to read this article! Network Marketing holds a special place in my heart, and I believe it can benefit so many people. However, over time the term “Network Marketing” or “Multi-Level Marketing” have gotten a bad rap. People often jump to the conclusion that they are a Pyramid Scheme.
I’m here today to tell you the facts vs fiction about Network Marketing, why I love it and what to look and ask for if you’re thinking about joining a Network Marketing Company.
First of all, let’s de-bunk this whole “Pyramid Scheme” ordeal. Pyramid Schemes are illegal for starters, so any kind of professional or well-known entrepreneur isn’t going to put their name on something illegal that could harm their reputation or business. If you ever want to know if the company you’re being approached to join is legitimate, just head over to dsa.org and look them up in the directory.
The main difference between a Pyramid Scheme and Network Marketing is that in a Pyramid Scheme there is no exchange of products or services. You only make money off recruits. In a Network Marketing company you will earn commissions on the profit of sales you make. Every Network Marketing company has different payout percentages so definitely make sure you ask for a copy of the compensation plan before joining any company. Network Marketing companies are NOT a “get rich quick” overnight – they take time and consistent effort just like any other business!
Network Marketing is ideal for someone who feels like they are meant for more, but maybe don’t know where to start. It’s a great way to get into the world of business without having to come up with your own product or service. If you join a good company, they will provide you with training & resources to grow your network and business – these are tools you will carry with you forever and can help when you get to a point where you are ready to launch your own product or service.
I joined a Network Marketing company February 2015. For the first time in a long time I was passionate about something again. I felt great because I was helping others and changing lives for the better.
A great benefit to Network Marketing is you can work it around your current lifestyle. You don’t need to run out and quit your job and have the stress of building a new business without a pay cheque. If done right and you have good leaders, you will learn to work it around your job until it gets to a point where it has supplemented your current income. This looks different for everyone. I’ve met people who have supplemented their income in 6 months, and some who take closer to 4 years – but it’s a plan B. There is no such thing as a secure corporate job anymore. I have heard handfuls of stories of people in network marketing who started it as something low-key to make a couple extra hundred dollars a month to go towards a vacation fund, and turned it into something big – then a few years down the road they lost their job and were thankful they had started their business when they did so they didn’t have the pressure and stress to pay bills and care for their families.
Now, not all network marketing companies are the same, so it is your responsibility to do your due diligence and do your research. You need to be with a company who’s products and ethics you stand behind. If you don’t believe or have a passion for what you are selling or distributing it will never work.
The whole point of “Network” Marketing is that you can market products you would use ANYWAYS to your network! It’s kind of like when you get a new pair of shoes and a friend comments and asks where you got them, you’re going to tell her the name of the store and the nice lady named Donna that helped you, and your friend will probably go see Donna and buy them! Did you make a profit off that? Nope! So why not do the exact same thing but make a profit from it?
So, next time you are approached by a friend or acquaintance or perhaps even a stranger – I encourage you to take the time to hear about the business opportunity they are presenting you with. Joining a Network Marketing company doesn’t have to be your entire life. I recently started my very own business on the side of my Network Marketing gig, and I truly believe I wouldn’t have been able to create it without the tools, resources and connections I made through my Network Marketing company. It has the potential to open so many doors for you.
Being a respectable person is one thing, but commanding respect is an entirely different thing.
Have you ever noticed how some people just seem to command respect from the second they walk into a room? Studies have shown that it takes people approximately 7 seconds from meeting you to form an impression of you.
So, whether your introducing yourself to someone for the first time or you want to be respected in already established relationships, i.e. boss, spouse, friends, I’m letting you in on a few different ways to make it happen.
1. Act like you deserve respect.
This seems like it doesn’t even need mentioning, but you would be surprised by how many people literally don’t feel they deserve respect.
Status and power are typically conveyed non-verbally by height and space. So standing tall, pulling your shoulders back, and holding your head straight!
These are all signals of confidence and competence and the easiest to work on starting today. Like, right now…
2. Set your boundaries
But, don’t just set them in your head. State them (when it’s appropriate) and make it very clear.
Try to stay away from words like, “I think,” or… “I don’t know” and especially, “I’m sorry”. I’ve noticed that women especially have this thing with the word “sorry”. We use it so loosely and too often.
There’s a thin line between coming off as polite and just plain, well… “sorry”.
Back to my point, set appropriate limits on what you’re willing (and able) to do, and what you are willing to accept or tolerate from others. Let your “YES” be yes, and your “NO” be no.
3. Dont overserve
I get it, we want to feel valuable and needed or just be helpful, but at what cost?
The problem with overserving is that you train others to expect this from you. They stop being grateful, because its expected of you.
“Serving” is fine. We women enjoy it within proper limits, but “overserving” causes unnecessary frustration and burnouts.
Mothers especially are known for putting our own needs last, and doing for others to the point of burnout.
Then, when you can’t follow through with promises, it makes you look unreliable which ultimately makes people lose respect for you.
5. Be assertive.
Stand up for yourself and others when necessary, without anger or rancor.
Ever heard of the saying, “Do no harm but take no sh*t”? Yasss to that.
If you stand up for and truly respect yourself, you don’t have need for anger. Remember, acting from anger will always hurt your cause.
4. Take care of yourself
If you always come off as super needy, people will begin to lose respect for you.
In the same token, if we don’t care for yourself – physically, emotionally, spiritually, how can we expect others to do so.
Dress well, even when it’s casual. And always, always, honor your time and commitments.
6. Stay calm and communicate
In the case, you need to be assertive and address someone that has disrespected you, you’ll want to remember “you can catch more flies with honey than vinegar”.
I have been married for 7 years, so I’ve become somewhat as a master at this lol.
Keep it a discussion, not a fight. Don’t accuse or belittle. You want to be understood and respected, not to browbeat.
Rather, talk about the effect of their actions on you, your feelings and try to hold back tears and anger.
These are things to be aware of and practice daily, but you won’t necessarily master it tomorrow. Most importantly, if you respect your self most people will simply follow suit.

LESS CONTENT IS MORE CONTENT
I have 2 words to describe the first website I ever built: Word. Vomit.
Anyone else feel me on that one?
It is seriously so easy to write wayyyy too much content for your website! And it makes sense why you would want to do that….your business is your baby….it’s the best company in the world and you’re so freaking excited to tell everyone every freaking reason why!!!
Unfortunately, too much content can be really overwhelming for the reader. I know that when I go to a site for the first time, if I see too much writing (or the paragraphs are too long) on the homepage I either think “I don’t have time to read this” or “I don’t even know where to start”….so then I usually just leave the page.
Reading a website isn’t like reading a book. When a person is reading a book, she reads every line. Left to right. You know the drill.
When a person is browsing a website….she’s doing just that. BROWSING.
She’s skimming your website for the keywords that will direct her to the information she’s looking for! It’s really important to keep this in mind when you’re creating content for your site. If you overwhelm your reader, she’s not going to stick around. So just tell her what you think she really wants to know!
You obviously want to provide informative content….but keep it simple, direct, and engaging.
HIGH QUALITY PICS ARE A MUST
Before somebody reads even one word on your site, they are going to visually see the imagery of the site! The pictures used on your website are going to be the FIRST IMPRESSION–so let’s make sure they are really amazing, k?!
I can’t stress enough the importance of using high quality photos on your website.
If you can’t afford a professional photographer, save up!…or figure out a way to trade. Whatever you have to do to get really well styled and well edited photos for your website…do it!
Make sure that your photos are also WELL BRANDED! Like I said, these pictures will be the first impression….so make sure they are as badass as you are!
Make an effort to style the whole shoot for your website to be totally representative of your brand….from the clothes, to the location of the shoot, to the color scheme of the details, to the vibe. Also, pictures that represent the day to day tasks of your business will go a really long way in your web design.
For example, if you’re a hairdresser then you would want styled pics of your favorite products, you using your favorite products, your cute salon chair, you wearing cute clothes and working on a client, etc.
As a health and fitness coach, you would need pictures of you working out, your weights next to a cute pair of nikes, a medicine ball with a towel and water bottle, healthy food ready to prep on your counter, you training someone, etc.
Get creative and have fun!
ORGANIZATION SHOULD BE OBVIOUS
Remember above when I said that people can get so overwhelmed by too much content that they don’t know where to start, so they just read nothing?
The same thing will happen if there are too many buttons and they don’t know where to CLICK.
I took a web design class in college and the book for the class was called “Don’t Make Me Think”. I’ll never forget these words.
Web users do not want to think about how to find something on your site. They want the information and/or buttons to be exactly where they think they should be! In the same way that people will skim for key words, people also skim for the buttons that they know will take them where they need to go to find the information they want to find.
Use your creativity to better your business model, not to try and reinvent standard organizational techniques. A well organized website decreases stress and annoyance…..which will make the person viewing your site much more inclined to stick around and see what you have to offer, in my opinion.
The information on your website site should be easy to understand and easy to find.
GIVE IT A SHOT
Whether you’re in the process of building your first site, or you want to give your current site a facelift….give these 3 keys a shot! I promise that if you pay attention to these seemingly small details, you and your web visitors will both be thanking me later 🙂
Do you ever look at other BossBabe’s and think to yourself “how on earth is she living her dream life?”. It’s something that is so easy to do, and we have to admit we have all done this at some point along the line.
But it’s not always something that is healthy to do – in fact, comparing how you feel on the inside to what you think you see on someone else’s outside can be the fastest way to slide down in to a downwards spiral.
As a Positive Psychologist, I used to feel so much pressure to be happy all of the time, and when I didn’t feel happy I used to pretend to be and would hide the fact that I felt a bit sad sometimes. This led to me creating a big gap between my inner world and my outer world – and when it comes to self mastery this is definitely not the right way to go.
To create unstoppable success on the outside and do life and business like a boss, you need to create unstoppable success on the inside first.
Last week there were a few days where I wasn’t feeling so great, and I just couldn’t shake the feeling off. I felt tired and like my get up and go had just got up and went.And it’s in those moments that it becomes easy to go in to self sabotage mode – to comfort eat, party too hard, or hate on yourself.
I’m all too aware of what’s possible (and what’s not) when self sabotage sets in. Your goals go out of the window and you’re on a downwards spiral to nowhere.
So what can you do when you’re feeling less than amazing to make things feel right?
First acknowledge that you’re feeling what you’re feeling, and allow that. If you need to cry, cry. If you’re feeling worried about something, acknowledge the worry. If you’re tired, say so. The first step to positive change is having the awareness to own where you are right now, and not feel bad about it. As soon as I acknowledged I was having a few days of feeling down, it allowed me to move through it.
Listen to your inner guru, when she guides you with what to do. The party might sound inviting, but what does your intuition say? She knows that isn’t the best way. Your inner guru is there for a reason and she doesn’t like to be ignored. Listen to what your gut is telling you, and don’t be afraid to say no to things. I was invited to an awesome pool party in the Hollywood Hills that I ended up saying no to – and I felt SO empowered by doing so.
Choose a positive behaviour and take action with it instead. This helps you feel new energy and also means you feel accomplished for doing something good. Instead of hitting the party I grabbed my housemate’s puppy and went out for a 90-minute walk in nature. I felt amazing afterwards and have done ever since!
So there’s 3 simple steps…. Acknowledge, listen, and then choose. That’s it!
Think about the positive choices you can make this week that will allow you to step closer to feeling authentically happy.
- You check your social media several times a day.
Not only is this bad for productivity it’s a really bad habit. It may seem like a small thing but overall the time wasted on social media adds up and takes away a lot of energy you could be putting towards something much more productive. Fix the little things to make the big things happen.
2. You spend more time making to-do lists than actually getting things done.
If you spend more time planning out what you are going to do than actually doing it than this might be a great reality check. Some people do this because they like to plan which is wonderful, but actually going out taking action will result in a lot more progress. We as women tend to overthink so it’s natural for us to ponder about all the things that need to get done but don’t let it overtake the amount you actually do or it will leave you feeling like you accomplished nothing. Create realistic goals and deadlines rather than lists of items that you know you can’t possibly finish.
3. You are not taking the time to align your priorities.
If you are spending more time working on things that aren’t important you are most likely holding back on the potential of something much more important. Prioritize the things you want to accomplish in order of importance to make sure you are spending more time no the important things.
I know sometimes it’s scary to admit that you’re pretty badass, but guess what….you are! And that’s ok to say out loud. It’s actually freaking amazing!
I can already tell that you’re a smart girl because you’re here, reading this blog, investing your time into yourself…and that’s the best investment you can ever make!
But me knowing that you’re smart & powerful isn’t enough. You really gotta step up and believe it about yourself! You will NEVER make the money you want if you’re participating in self-doubt and second guessing your every move.
Just think about it. Wanting success while operating under self-doubt doesn’t even make sense.
Read these 2 statements then you tell me which girl you think is probably going to be more successful:
Girl 1: “I want to make $5,000 this month……but…i’m not sure really sure if i can….”
Girl 2: “I want to make $5,000 this month…..and I can’t wait till I do!”
My money is on Girl 2. She knows what she wants, and she knows that accomplishing her goal is very attainable!
There officially isn’t any more time for negative self talk. So from now on, you’re going to be your own #1 Fan!!! Got it? Good.
ACCEPT THE FACT THAT YOU ARE AMAZING
Stressing the importance of admitting how amazing you are might seem silly to you, but i PROMISE it’s necessary if you want to be successful! So take a second right now and say it out loud with me:
“I am amazing”
“I am capable”
“I am talented”
“I am powerful”
“I got this”
You’re reading this article because you want to get better…which is something that only amazing people do! Maybe you’re reading this in secret….like, you have an idea that you THINK you might be a hit….but you’re too nervous to vocalize it and show the world what you’re creating yet. But guess what, THAT’S amazing too!!! Sometimes even just admitting our ideas to ourselves is hard step to take….but it’s a really important step too.
So, Go Girl!!
For most people (including me), becoming confident enough to proudly say, “I AM AMAZING AND I HAVE AMAZING THINGS TO OFFER THIS WORLD”….is a really gradual process. But it’s also a NECESSARY key to overcoming self-doubt and making money with your business.
Let’s just say that no one ever became successful because they thought their idea sucked.
DECIDE WHAT YOU WANT. THEN DECIDE HOW TO GET IT.
Now that we’re all on the same page that you’re MORE than capable of running a successful business and making the money you want….let’s make a plan!
No one became a millionaire overnight (unfortunately). So an alternative is to map out a plan to slowly but surely achieve the success you’re hoping for!
For example, the thought of “I want to make $1,000 this month” can seem overwhelming. BUT, finding 10 clients to pay $100 (or 20 clients to pay $50) this month seems a little bit more attainable, right?
Decide how much money you want to make this month, then determine the price of your product or service….and then just do the math!!!!
Number of clients X cost of product or service = $$$ monthly income!
It’s just math, babes!
Check in with yourself on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis. Take a look at the actions you have been taking. Are you making the money you want? If yes, AWESOME….keep working it sis! If not, that’s awesome too…..because now you know what NOT to do moving forward
Sometimes learning what NOT to do is equally (if not more) valuable than figuring out what you should be doing to be successful!
RECOGNIZE THAT YOU ARE A VALUABLE ASSET
That hobby that you can’t wait to do every day…..that’s not just a hobby that comes naturally to everyone. You’re good at it because YOU’RE GOOD AT IT!!!!
What you have to offer isn’t just common knowledge….it’s actually extremely VALUABLE!!! And your valuable gifts and talents actually have the ability to make so many businesses and lives complete!
Do you love graphics and designing? Their are so many companies out there who need you for branding and logo designs. Do you love fitness and teaching people about nutrition? Their are so many people who need you to help them get in shape. The list could go on, but i think you get the point.
You won’t ever make a dime with your gift or business idea if you don’t recognize how valuable it is. The bottom line is that if you don’t recognize your value….no one else will.
