‘Tis the season to be jolly, and ‘tis the season to werk. Boss babes don’t take holidays like the average person. But, we humor the 9-5 folks by attending holiday parties and, of course, scheming to make the most out of them. Here are 8 ways to make the most out of festive merrymaking:
1. Dress to Impress
Duh. When don’t you? Even if it’s an ugly-Christmas-sweater party, make sure your outfit is on point. Don’t be too flashy and don’t show too much skin, but don’t turn down the glam. Think about what your colleagues will be wearing and dress one level up from that. Think black or gemstone colors with no heels greater than 4 inches. Don’t forget a little extra lipstick!
2. Go Solo
Or if you’re going with a friend, make sure you aren’t stuck to their side the whole time. The whole point of netwerking is reaching out and meeting new people, so make yourself available to do so. Be confident, and make the rounds around the party so you can netwerk at max capacity.
3. Make Yourself Remembered
Introduce yourself with a big smile and a firm handshake. You don’t want to be handing out business cards like Jello shots, but they are good to have on hand. Be nothing but kind and light-hearted. This is a festive shindig after all, so have fun in a way that will make people want to be around you again in the future.
People love to talk about themselves, so let them. Open your ears and show that you are interested in what they have to say. If you want to make connections, this will make people want to connect with you. Plus, as a boss babe, you know there is ALWAYS something new to learn.
5. Avoid Touchy Subjects
Now is not the time to discuss opinions on the U.S. Torture Report, Ferguson, ISIS, religion, politics, or anything else that would possibly upset someone or create negative vibes. If someone else brings it up, stay neutral and subtly change the subject. You don’t want to be a part of any debates, at least not while Mariah Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas” is jamming in the background.
6. Eat First, Drink Lightly
Of course there are going to be lots of delish treats and yummies at the party. Possibly ones that are Insta-worthy. And free champagne. And your favorite macaroons. But do your best to say no. Eat a meal before you arrive so that you aren’t famished in front of the cookie table. As tempting as the bubbly seems, it is best to sip. You’re werking, remember? If you need to, hit up your favorite dessert place after to treat yourself for being so boss. You just don’t want to be drunkenly gorging a bacon-wrapped weenie in front of that CEO.
7. Be Thankful, and Follow Up
Make sure you thank the hostess for inviting you to the lovely gathering, even if you couldn’t wait to leave. Afterwards, follow up with any connections you may have made. By following up within 24 hours, they are more likely to remember you and put a face to your name and email. Keep that connection going!
8. Just Go!
It’s cold. It’s snowy. Netflix and sweatpants sound way better than going to that party, but get yourself up and go. Make the effort and reap the rewards later. You won’t regret it.
